Stone carpet on stairs: renovating outdoor steps without demolition
Outdoor stairs are the hardest-worked surface at a house: frost, salt, water and shoes destroy them faster than a terrace. The classic repair — hacking off tiles, levelling, gluing new ones — is laborious and expensive. A stone carpet solves it more elegantly: the old base stays, and the steps get a new seamless skin.
Why stairs specifically
- No demolition: lays directly over old concrete, terrazzo and firmly bonded tiles — no debris, no skip.
- Anti-slip: the textured surface grips in the wet, and less ice forms because water drains through.
- A seamless edge: tread and riser are wrapped in one piece — no joints for water to enter and frost to tear tiles off.
- Speed: a typical staircase is done in 2–3 days, walkable after 24 hours.
- Looks: the steps colour-match a terrace or walkway in the same stone.
What does it cost?
| Item | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Stone carpet on flat areas | CZK 1,200–2,000/m² |
| Stairs (edge shaping, profiles) | +30–50% on the m² price |
| A typical outdoor staircase (8–12 steps) | usually CZK 15–35 thousand |
| Substrate remediation (repair, priming) | by condition, from hundreds CZK/m² |
Prices excl. VAT. The exact price depends on the length of edges — edges are most of the work on stairs.
How the renovation proceeds
- Substrate assessment: the concrete must be sound; hollow and detached tile sections are removed and repaired.
- Repair and falls on the treads (a slight fall so water runs off).
- Priming with epoxy and a quartz broadcast — the key to adhesion.
- Trowelling the carpet: edges shaped flush, or with an aluminium/stainless stair profile.
- Curing: walkable after 24 hours, full load within a week.
What to watch out for
- A UV-stable resin is a must outdoors — cheap epoxy yellows in the sun.
- An unrepaired base: a carpet will not save structurally failed stairs — those must be repaired first (we do both in one job).
- Winter care: clear snow with a plastic edge, not a steel scraper; salt does not harm a quality system.
