Stone carpet or paving? Comparison for terraces and around the house

Terrace, walkways, pool surrounds — everywhere today the choice is between a stone carpet and paving. Both surfaces serve for decades; they differ in price, maintenance and a few details that only show after years.

Price

Mind the hidden item: paving over old concrete usually means demolition or a new base. A stone carpet lays directly on it — in renovations it often wins on total price even without the lowest per-m² rate.

Water, frost and slip

  • Stone carpet is permeable — rain soaks through, no puddles or ice sheets form, and the surface grips even wet.
  • Paving sheds water across the surface — it needs an exact fall and winter attention to ice; smooth tiles by a pool are slippery (R11+ anti-slip needed).
  • Neither suffers in frost with a properly built base — but with paving the joints and bedding are critical (see our block-paving article).

Maintenance and repairs

  • Carpet: no joints = no weeds; an occasional pressure wash. Local damage is fixed with an invisible patch.
  • Paving: topping up and cleaning joints, occasionally re-levelling a settled paver; the upside — a single element can always be replaced.

Looks and possibilities

Paving offers formats and cut lines — a modern large-format look. A stone carpet is the opposite: a seamless "monolithic" area that flows around curves, posts and stairs without cutting, and can do colour transitions. On complex areas and stairs the carpet tends to be faster and cheaper; on large flat areas paving comes out better.

Quick recommendations

  • Renovating an old concrete terrace or stairs: stone carpet — no demolition, done in 2–3 days.
  • Pool surrounds: stone carpet (anti-slip + fast drying).
  • A driveway: block paving, or carpet in driveable thickness.
  • A large new terrace by a modern house: large-format pavers on pedestals.
