Block paving and hard surfaces: driveway, paths and terrace without puddles
The hard surfaces around a house define everyday comfort: a dry walk to the door, mud-free parking, a terrace for sitting out. And an iron rule applies: paving is only the visible layer — the base decides the lifespan.
Surface options
| Surface | Price incl. base | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Block paving | from ~CZK 1,100/m² | all-rounder for driveways and paths |
| Large-format concrete slabs | from ~CZK 1,600/m² | modern look, terraces and paths |
| Stone setts (granite) | from ~CZK 2,500/m² | prestigious, practically eternal |
| Gravel lawn / pebbles | from ~CZK 500/m² | permeable, cheap, for secondary areas |
The right build-up for a car driveway
- Excavation to 35–45 cm, compacted subgrade,
- geotextile against layer mixing,
- coarse aggregate 0/63 or 0/32 compacted in layers (25–30 cm),
- bedding layer 4/8 (3–4 cm),
- paving 6 cm (pedestrian) / 8 cm (vehicular), kerbs set in concrete, sand jointing.
Footpaths need roughly half that build-up. "Saving" on depth and compaction shows up as ruts after the first winter.
Don't forget the water
- Gradients of 1–2% always away from the house,
- linear drains in front of the garage and entrance,
- permeable areas or on-plot soakaways — municipalities increasingly require them,
- kerbs as a rigid frame: without them, block paving "walks".
The best timing
Hard surfaces are built after the facade and ground works — as the final step of construction. For new builds they're the separate "Fencing & paved areas" item in our calculator; for older houses we build them standalone, drainage included. Measurement and quote are free.
