House terrace: wood, WPC or paving? 2026 prices and comparison
A terrace is the cheapest "extension" a house can get — a few tens of thousands of crowns turn the garden into a second living room. The key decision is the decking material: wood, wood-plastic composite (WPC) or paving. Each has a different price, lifespan and maintenance needs.
Wooden terrace — the natural classic
- Price incl. substructure and installation: larch from about CZK 3,000/m², exotic hardwoods CZK 4,500–6,000/m².
- Pros: natural look, warm surface even barefoot.
- Cons: annual oiling; untreated it greys and splinters. Lifespan 15–25 years by species.
WPC — maintenance-free
- Price installed: CZK 3,500–5,500/m².
- Pros: no oiling, no splinters, stable colour; ideal by a pool.
- Cons: heats up more in the sun, cheap profiles can move; the look is more "regular" than wood.
Paving on pedestals or a bed — for generations
- Price incl. base: 2 cm ceramic pavers on pedestals CZK 2,500–4,000/m²; concrete/block paving in a bed from CZK 1,500/m².
- Pros: virtually indestructible, zero maintenance, frost-proof; drainage and cables can run under pedestal paving.
- Cons: harder and colder surface, tighter demands on base flatness and fall.

What a terrace stands (and falls) on
The base decides the lifespan: a compacted gravel bed with a 1–2% fall away from the house, and for wood and WPC a ventilated substructure on aluminium or timber joists. The most common mistake is decking laid straight on soil — wavy after the first winter. The correct base build-up is always part of our quote.
