Drywall in interiors: partitions, ceilings and wall linings without myths
Drywall has an undeserved reputation as a "paper" substitute. The truth: a properly designed drywall assembly today delivers partitions with better sound insulation than brick, carries kitchen cabinets and TVs, and is unmatched for ceilings.
Where drywall wins
- Speed and cleanliness: no wet processes — a partition stands in a day, painted in three.
- Low weight: ideal for flats and upper floors where masonry would overload the ceiling.
- Services inside: wiring and plumbing hide within the structure without chasing.
- Ceilings: recessed lights, heat-recovery or AC ducting, acoustic insulation.
- Acoustics: double cladding with mineral wool beats a common brick partition.
Myths vs reality
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| "It can't hold anything" | with proper anchors it holds shelves, TVs, even a boiler; heavy loads use built-in reinforcements |
| "It's noisy" | an acoustic partition with wool achieves 50+ dB — more than brick |
| "It fears water" | bathrooms get impregnated (green) boards + liquid waterproofing |
| "It cracks" | only bad installation cracks — skipped expansion joints and skimped profiles |
Indicative 2026 prices
- Standard partition: from ~CZK 1,100/m² incl. insulation and jointing,
- acoustic partition (double cladding): from ~CZK 1,500/m²,
- ceiling: from ~CZK 900/m²,
- wall lining: from ~CZK 700/m².
What to watch for
- Profiles every 40 cm (not "economy" 60) wherever loads will hang.
- Mineral wool in every partition — without it, it's a drum.
- Quality 3-coat jointing (Q2–Q3) — decides the look in side light.
- In bathrooms, impregnated boards and waterproofing even under tiles.
