Window replacement: PVC, wood or aluminium? Comparison and 2026 prices

Old leaky windows mean draughts, noise and high bills. Window replacement is one of the renovations with an instantly visible effect — but only with the right material and, above all, quality installation.

PVC windows — best price/performance

• Price: lowest; a standard window from ~CZK 6–9k including fitting.
• Pros: excellent insulation, zero maintenance, wide choice of finishes.
• Cons: less rigidity in large formats; scratches can't be repaired locally.

Wooden windows — natural look and rigidity

• Price: roughly 1.5–2× PVC.
• Pros: prestigious look, long life with maintenance, can be refurbished.
• Cons: repainting every 5–10 years.

Aluminium windows — for large glazing

• Price: highest, roughly 2–2.5× PVC.
• Pros: maximum rigidity — ideal for large and sliding glazing (lift-slide portals), slim modern frames, maintenance-free.
• Cons: price; the cheapest profiles have weaker thermal parameters.

Double or triple glazing?

For heated rooms today, clearly triple glazing (Ug ≈ 0.5–0.7) — the price difference is small and pays back in heating. Double glazing makes sense for garages, workshops and cottages. Don't forget a "warm edge" spacer — it suppresses condensation around the glass perimeter.

Installation matters more than the brand

Even the priciest window fails if fitted badly. Insist on:

• alignment and anchoring per the installation manual,
• vapour-tight tape inside and vapour-open tape outside (standard-compliant installation),
• finished reveals and properly sloped sills.

What to budget overall
